The Stories of the Red String of Fate

The Red String of Fate. It dates back to the Tang Dynasty (around 618 CE) when Wei Gu cried over his lack of marriage.

While wandering, pondering his loveless life, he saw an old man, Yue Lao, with a long beard sitting under the moon. On the one hand, was a journal, and on the other were threads. Wei Gu approached the man and asked him what he was reading.

Yue Lao told him it was records of recent marriages. The old lunar matchmaker Yue Lao pointed to a young girl and her grandmother walking. Then, told him she would be his wife in a decade. Yue Lao told him a magical cord strung the two together, and they’d spent many lives searching for each other.

Wei Gu thought this was a joke and threw a stone between the girl’s eyes.

Continuing his life as the years passed, Wei Gu became a government official, showing hard work and always taking responsibility. Because of his career with the governor, the governor blessed him by marrying his daughter.

Wei Gu questioned why his now-wife wore a patch on her forehead on their wedding night. She expressed she was insecure about a mark there and explained that a young man injured her with a stone when she was young.

Wei Gu told her about meeting the old man and the red thread. Getting down on his knees, he asked his wife for forgiveness. She accepted his forgiveness, and they stayed in a long-lasting, satisfying relationship.

The Emperor and the Peasant

The Red String of Fate: This version begins with a great emperor who desires to know his future wife. What would she look like? Would she be of a powerful and wealthy family, as he hoped?

The emperor heard stories from local villages that an invisible red thread would lead people to their destined lovers.

Everyone had the thread around their finger, and no one knew when or where they would meet their fate.

The emperor heard of a witch who could see the thread and had it on. The emperor ordered the witch to him, and she came. He asked her to take him to his destined lover. The witch took him to a small village and led him in front of a poor peasant woman holding her child.

She told the emperor the thread led to the woman and the baby, but the emperor became enraged before the witch could say anymore. He felt the witch mocked the emperor — how could a powerful man be the destined lover of a peasant woman?

The emperor pushed the woman, injuring the woman and the baby and leaving a scar on its forehead. Then, he ordered his guards to execute the witch.

Years passed, and when it came time for the emperor to marry, he had a bride picked for him. When he unveiled his bride on his wedding day, it was a beautiful woman with a scar on her forehead.

He asked her how she got the scar. She explained that a madman hurt her and her mother when she was small. The emperor recognized who the woman was, broke down in front of her, and asked for her forgiveness.
